New Orleans has been chosen as the 2012 IAJRC Convention city. The venue is the 4 star, 693-room Astor Crowne Plaza hotel, which is ideally situated in the French Quarter on the corner of famed Canal and Bourbon streets. New Orleans is a great city that has a wonderful history of jazz. There are many jazz-related attractions and places to visit, as well as the Aquarium of the Americas, jazz riverboat trips, Harrah’s Casino, Mardi Gras World and much more. While jazz is not the only music that prevails in the city, it is probably the most popular. Brass bands and jazz groups set-up on many streets around the French Quarter, playing from early afternoon to the wee hours of the morning. If you want to experience the real “jazz flavor” of New Orleans (just a few short blocks away from the hotel), you can go to the famous Preservation Hall one evening after the day’s convention activities are done. There are plenty of other great jazz places to visit and full details will be available in the convention program.

Getting There:

Via Air: Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) is the gateway to the city. Taxis from the airport to the hotel cost s $33 for one or two people or $15 each for three or more passengers. The Airport Shuttle ($20 one-way or $38 for a round trip) drops you off and picks you up at your hotel. This is a cheaper and more efficient alternate to a taxi (around 45 minutes to/from the airport).

Via Rail: New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, at 1001 Loyola Avenue, is within walking distance of the hotel or a short taxi ride away. Amtrak’s Crescent (from New York, Washington & Atlanta), City of New Orleans (from Chicago & Memphis) and Sunset Limited (from Los Angeles, San Antonio & Houston) provide comfortable coach and sleeping car service to the terminal.

Via Automobile: New Orleans is directly on I-10 and is also connected by I-55 and I-59 from northern points.

Convention Program

Those of you who attended the 2010 (Chicago) or 2011 (Manchester) conventions, will know what to expect in New Orleans. If this is your first convention, then you'll find:

Convention Rates:

Convention registration is $130 per person (including the banquet). If you book before May 31st, there is an Early Bird Discount of $15, so you'll pay just $115! The rate for banquet attendees only, is $55 (includes the live jazz).

If you are not a member and wish to attend the convention, you can join the IAJRC for a year and register for the special price of just $155 (US/Canada) and $160 (other countries). You can deduct a further $15 if paying before May 31st. A combined saving of $20.

Hotel Reservations:

All events will be held at the Astor Crowne Plaza hotel, New Orleans.  A very special IAJRC room rate of $99 will apply for all nights between Monday, September 3 and Tuesday, September 11 as long as the rooms are booked by August 15, 2012. A room upgrade to an Executive Level room can also be made for an additional cost of $40 per night.
