Steve Lawler is a British house music producer and DJ born in Birmingham, England.
Beginning at age 17, Steve Lawler staged a series of illegal parties in a tunnel under the M42 motorway from 1990 to 1994. After several parties, the event began to regularly attract over 500 people and eventually earned Lawler appearances at proper clubs.
He has held residences at many popular dance clubs such as Space, The End and Twilo. Because of his successful performances at Space in Ibiza, he has been nicknamed King of Space.
Rather than any particular genre or musical groups, Steve Lawler says that his brand of dark house is influenced more by "vices" and dark experiences.
Steve Lawler founded the digital record label Viva Music in 2005, as a reaction to the increased sales in MP3s relative to vinyl and CDs. Steve Lawler himself stopped using vinyl in live sets.

We did an e-mail interview with the DJ/Producer before his show in Cluj-Napoca, Romania in December and received the answers just as CZB was switching off of Wordpress onto this NEW Site.
You will find this week's Gigs at the end of the article; the artist will be spending New Year's in Australia

RiCo (CZB): When did you first start to collect records and which was the first one you bought?
Steve Lawler: I was 15, and it was a ‘Dépêche Mode album’, also The Doors L.A. Women.
---
RiCo (CZB):
Wikipedia cites Depeche Mode and The Doors as being
inspirational for your. How did you discover Depeche Mode and
who introduced you to The Doors?
Steve Lawler: I’m
not really sure how I discovered Dépêche Mode, I
think it was from hearing one of their more commercial records and
then checking out their albums, which I loved. The Doors ...I
had an older friend and we used to hang out and play music to each
other, and he played me some music buy The Doors and I was
immediately hooked

RiCo (CZB): Danny Tenaglia. How did you discover him and how has he influenced your state of mind?
Steve Lawler: My first ever clubbing experience in the US was going to see him play at the tunnel. It was incredible... musically, back then, he was very exiting, and doing something I had not heard before..
I was influenced by his dedication and variety and in the way he structured a set and cared about the lights in the room.
---
RiCo (CZB):
How did you get the idea to stage a series of raves in a tunnel under
the M42 motorway?
Steve Lawler: It wasn’t an idea, it
was more a way of playing records to an audience. I was too young to
play in clubs when I started doing these (raves), and the fact that
they were illegal excited me.
---
RiCo (CZB): Before Viva, you had another record company, Harlem Records ... what was your connection to Harlem (the NYC neighbourhood)?
Steve Lawler: Yes, Harlem was a city of music back in the day. It was primarily black music, soul and blues.. but the city depended on and lived for music... That’s why I chose the name Harlem Records.
---
RiCo (CZB): With Viva Music you stopped using Vinyls ... do you think there is a sound quality difference between vinyls and mp3s?
Steve Lawler: Yes, there is a difference in sound. Digital will never sound a good as vinyl, but you have to embrace the future which is what we did... however, we do still sell vinyl :)
---
RiCo (CZB): You introduced Nima Gorji to Cluj in December. What do you like about his style and why do you believe in his talent?
Steve Lawler: He is a great DJ and producer and someone I am happy to have introduced to the people in Cluj :)
