One to watch in his merging of hip-hop, jazz and indie, ‘WHOAMI’ is an impactful introduction to WYLAH, the North London MC firing back against ignorance, prejudice and misinformation. Blending furious wordplay with claustrophobic production, it's a fierce rebuke to those who lazily classify others and spread hatred.
The track is buoyed by production that rattles speakers, clicking hi-hats echoing through the track with Wylah pointedly declaring “f*ck off with your labels” right from the off. 'WHOAMI' flicks between firing off his own clapbacks to those who question him, and the doubt this causes within himself. It’s a mesmeric ride that sinks under the skin and one that strikes a chord in our current times of turmoil and divide.
With a triumphant show at Brixton’s legendary Windmill under his belt - see the above clip - 'WHOAMI' is just the beginning. “The next time ignorants ask me where I’m from/I’m from the moon” – watch out for Wylah excusing himself while he kisses the sky.
