GARY LUCAS returns to NYC this Fri. Feb. 16th-- Chinese New Year-- with the debut of his new trio featuring mainland Chinese vocalist and erhu virtuoso Feifei Yang and Jason Candler on multiple reeds and percussion.

performing “THE EDGE OF HEAVEN LIVE”, Gary's celebrated salute to mid-century Chinese pop, at the Laurie Beechman Theatre at 7pm.

Their special Chinese New Year concert includes dreamy images of Old Shanghai—“the Paris of the East”—projected by lighting designer Kristopher Anton.

Gary Lucas recently returned from Serbia where he performed at the opening ceremonies of film director Emir Kusturica’s 11th Kustendorf Film Festival (FOTO), accompanying a fragment of the lost 1918 Russian Futurist “Bound By Film” starring Vladimir Mayakovsky and Lilya Brik, and Rene Clair’s 1924 surrealist classic “Entr’acte”:

He also sat in with Emir Kusturica and the No Smoking Orchestra at their midnightconcert the following evening.

Upon returning to NYC, Gary brought his multimedia THE WORLD OF CAPTAIN BEEFHEART tribute to his late friend visionary artist Don Van Vliet into a packed City Winery NYC.

The evening included historic video clips and recordings, Van Vliet poetry readings by Bob Holman and Tammy Faye Starlite, and an incendiary performance by Gary's new ensemble of the same name featuring vocalist Nona Hendryx (Labelle), Jesse Krakow on bass, Jordan Shapiro on keyboards, and Richard Dworkin on drums.
