Membership in the Jazz Journalists Association
Dear Media Colleagues, Jazz Stakeholders and Supporters,

Today both jazz journalism and the jazz world as a whole are much in flux, largely due to the advent of digital media. These changes in what we hear, how we hear it, and how those of us who are journalists spread the news is exciting, but present many professional challenges to everybody. And recent times have been tough financially for many, throughout the jazz world. It can be daunting to engage in learning new online and social media skills, expanding your professional network, researching new entrepreneurial ideas, all while sustaining what you’ve got, day to day.

Membership in the Jazz Journalists Association can help. The JJA is the most active professional group in arts media searching, collectively, for new income opportunities for its members. The JJA offers up-to-date media skills training sessions, workshops and online publications that can help you create your own platforms, promote your materials and your career. It’s a far-reaching organization at the center of a dynamic international network of jazz journalists -- writers, broadcasters, photographers, new media professionals, anyone covering seriously and consistently any form of jazz in any and all media --  as well as professionals throughout jazz industries who realize  21st Century media now allows (and requires!) new strategies and tools for communicating about the music.

Right now, as part of its annual Jazz Awards process and  for the first time in its 24-year history, the Jazz Journalists Association is offering a $20 discount on  allnew  memberships. We invite you to join up.

To apply the discount, enter the Coupon Code 2012Awards when you are asked for it during the payment process. This discount will be honored through June 30, 2012, for new members only; it does not apply to renewals or student memberships. The JJA is recognized by the IRS as a 501.c3 nonprofit organization and dues are likely tax deductible as a business expense.

The JJA aims to help its members stay on the cutting edge of jazz media use and nurture best practices for evolution of the journalistic profession, the same way jazz musicians have to keep up with developments in the music themselves and have a position within the music’s history and community, too.  In 2011 alone, the JJA has conducted its online
eyeJAZZ video training program, comprising 15  eyeJazz webinars still available for self-instruction, and an active, “private” eyeJAZZ videographers discussion group on Facebook, whose members continue to discuss their works, bring up issues and share information. We plan do similar webinars to advance other training in social and online media. The JJA has produced its third annual mini-conference at the Association of Performing Arts Presenters conventions, meetings at Chamber Music Association's annual convention, panel discussions and social sessions at jazz festivals far and wide, an international Blogathonand Media Extravaganza during Jazz Appreciation Month 2012 and now again the JJA Jazz Awards, celebrating excellence in jazz and jazz journalism, now for the 16th year.

The JJA is the only professional association monitoring and promoting the interests of jazz-oriented journalists -- all jazz in all media -- and expanding the media reach of others in the jazz world. Aspiring and established jazz media makers alike gain immeasurably from contact with each other and group discussion of the experiences we’re all having as new technology changes everything. Like other professional associations, the JJA is founded on the idea that a knowledge base and potential for the profession grows from a mix of active veterans and new  professionals looking into what’s necessary, what’s possible, what’s essential, and how do we move towards getting all that.

If you are a jazz journalist, or a supporter of jazz journalism (in the jazz industries or not), join the Jazz Journalists Association today to take advantage of our dues discount offer.

Please write back to me directly if you have questions or comments on the JJA. I look forward to hearing from you --
