CatRhythm is Romania's first rockabilly band.
On Friday, April 20th, they will be playing for the first time in Club Diesel, in their hometown of Cluj-Napoca. We exchanged a few email questions prior to the show with band leader and Dutchman Eric Hofmans.

RiCo for CZB.ro: When did you first start listening to music and how did your music tastes evolve?
Eric Hofmans (guitarist, band leader, CatRhythm): As my mother was a huge Elvis Presley fan I heard rock & roll from the moment I could walk (same as my older brother). After hearing Little Richard, Elvis, Bill Haley
it evolved in to the roots of rockabilly. As my older brother at that time started
working he could afford buying records (vinyls) of Eddie Cochran, Johnny Burnette, Carl Perkins The early rockabilly of 1955.
---
CZB: How did you start playing the guitar and when did you get your first guitar?
Eric Hofmans (guitarist, CatRhythm): Pretty simple. My brother bought a bass and together with a friend who played drums he wanted to start a band. As they missed a guitar player I got a cheap imitation of a Les Paul (certainly not a Gibson), went to the library and got the book “How to play guitar in 10 lessons". Six months later we had our first concert.
---
CZB: How did you get involved in the Rockabilly scene?
Eric Hofmans (CatRhythm): In the late ’70 early ’80 you had the rockabilly revival with the Stray Cats. When started our first band it was already a cult scene which needed bands as there were not enough. And as you get from one concert to the next, you build your name.
---
CZB: How did CatRhythm first start out?
Eric Hofmans (CatRhythm): Catrhythm in Holland started as a merge between Mad Fred & The Maniacs (a band where I played in) and
Junior Marvel (a good friend of mine). As our front man of Mad Fred had some health issues and we had ongoing concerts, Junior Marvel helped us out. At the point, when Mad Fred decided not to sing anymore (in January 2007) Junior Marvel came on board to stay. However, we sounded different with him and he had a different band sound. So we changed the name into something new… CatRhythm.
---
CZB: How did you come up with the name CatRhythm?
Eric Hofmans (CatRhythm): We were driving to a gig and were thinking of a name (there was a huge list) and then Johnny Cash was on the radio with his Sun Recording Get Rhythm. We looked at each other and said "as rockabilly’s are called Cats we should include that". So that is how CatRhythm was born.
---
CZB: When and how did the Dutch CatRhythm project shut down?
Eric Hofmans (CatRhythm): The Dutch version ended as I was very involved in work and I just did not have time to combine work and a lot of concerts (somewhere during 2009).
---
CZB: When and how did the Romanian CatRhythm project start out?
Eric Hofmans (CatRhythm): After moving to Romania, the rockabilly virus started working again. So in January 2010 we (Ana San and myself) started searching musicians to form a band. It was not easy as rockabilly is not very known in Romania.
After three months we had our line up and started rehearsing
---
CZB: Why did you choose to move to Cluj-Napoca?
Eric Hofmans (CatRhythm): I got a job in Cluj Napoca.
---
CZB: How did you and Ana meet?
Eric Hofmans (CatRhythm): That is really long story which would make a blockbuster in Hollywood. In short: I hired her for a job. We did not meet for over a year until we went to the same bar, where thunder and lighting struck us, and we have been together ever since
---
CZB: How do you see the local music scene developing?
Eric Hofmans (CatRhythm): I think that there are extremely talented musicians in Cluj. It is a pity that there are only a few bars that support different kinds of music genres than what you hear on the radio. As the radio stations only play what they are told to play, there is no diversity. So my guess is that it will take a few years before you can choose to which band (genre) you prefer to go and listen.
In the end it will happen because people are always searching for something new.
