Hello everyone. Because of COVID19, we know things are not going as we thought they would. I’m shocked but like everyone I’m making the necessary adjustments. I hope 2020 will get better real soon for all.
Anyway, I wanted to keep in touch. Here’s what’s going on with me:
March came in with my new record, You Can’t Lose With The Blues, at #1 on the Jazzweek Jazz Chart for two weeks running! I am at a loss for words, except to say, thank you all for your love and support. You made it happen.
Here is a video I did for you all yesterday from home: Something Special For You. Also what I did yesterday for the first time ever, was teach a piano lesson online via Skype. So if anyone is interested in taking a lesson, even from you home, we can do it. Just send me a message.
So, to start off the year with my main man, tenor great Houston Person is such a joy. The HP Quartet bandmates bassist
Matthew Parrish and drummer Vince Ector always add to the excitement as
we play together for the annual Jazz Cruise. We were very fortunate to all came back happy and healthy.
As we set sail from Miami for Costa Maya, I enjoyed watching Houston get ready for his opening show with the Jazz Cruise All Stars. This year the HP Quartet’s first concert was on Super Bowl Sunday, where people were distracted by the game as usual. Congratulations to whoever won.
The next day in Costa Maya, we got to tour the Mayan ruins. Wow! I knew the Mayans had an advanced civilization, with knowledge of medicine and engineering, but I didn’t know they’d documented much of that knowledge in books called The Maya Codices. Unfortunately for all humanity, almost all of those written documents, preserving hundreds of years of accumulated knowledge, were burned by the Spanish conquerors. Only 3 or 4 of the thousands of documents survived, including teaching on how to medicate against some infectious diseases.
Back home in Brooklyn it was time to get together to rehearse (here's another video) for my Mezzrow gig with the great bassist Lonnie Plaxico and the talented young drummer Jerome Jennings.

I’m hoping to see you all again sooner rather than later. But we have to keep safe and stay away from groups, so in the meantime, keep listening, learning and growing.
Take Care, Lafayette Harris Jr.
