The second single from London-based, jazz-electronic trio Devils Of Moko is named after the Ayurvedic Sanskrit word for the element ‘air.’ The band’s pianist Dominic J Marshall notes that to him, the term represents anxiety and pain. With its halting, haunting piano intro, ‘Vata’ hints at a descent into the deep and gritty depths of fear, before emerging out the other side as something beautiful and light. As you can see in the above video, the introduction of Sam Gardner’s elastic breaks and Mulele Matondo’s bass groove add further layers, and the Devils’ key electronic component helps send ‘Vata’ soaring into uptempo crescendo.

Devils of Moko are Mulele Matondo (Kongo Dia Ntotila), Sam Gardner (Septabeat, Samadhi Quintet), and Dominic J Marshall (The Cinematic Orchestra). They stir a London-based melting pot that captures all of their individual styles and distinctively different voices. Where each player’s individual influence shines through, the Devils’ playground is shaped by the departure from Western musical structure of Mulele’s Congolese rhythms and sonic stories; Sam’s explorations of electronica and drum & bass that carve an edge into the trio’s voice; and the soulful jazz melodies of Dominic’s piano playing that spark warmth and breed an uplifting, soul-busting sound.
