Sharkwater / Rob Stewart / CA / 2006 / 89 min / English - French
For filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it turned into was a beautiful and dangerous life journey into the balance of life on earth.
Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas. Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video, Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the world's shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. In an effort to protect sharks, Stewart teams up with renegade conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Their unbelievable adventure together starts with a battle between the Sea Shepherd and shark poachers in Guatemala, resulting in pirate boat ramming, gunboat chases, mafia espionage, corrupt court systems and attempted murder charges, forcing them to flee for their lives. Through it all, Stewart discovers these magnificent creatures have gone from predator to prey, and how despite surviving the earth's history of mass extinctions, they could easily be wiped out within a few years due to human greed. Stewart's remarkable journey of courage and determination changes from a mission to save the world's sharks, into a fight for his life, and that of humankind.
Homotoxicus/ Carole Poliquin / CA / 2007 / 87 min / French - English
homotoxicus.jpgEveryday, an impressive amount of toxic substances is released in the environment, while we are still unsure of the long term effects these molecules have on humans and other living beings. Some of these substances seep into our body, so that while we transfer a genetic pool to our children, they also receive a toxic pool. In a serious and humorous breakthrough investigation, based on her own blood analysis, the director explores the link between these toxic substances and the increase of certain health problems like cancers, lower fertility and hyperactivity. The conclusions are shocking.

Addicted to Plastic/ Ian Connacher / CA / 2008 / 85 min / English
ADDICTED TO PLASTIC encompasses three years of filming in 12 countries on 5 continents, including two trips to the middle of the Pacific Ocean where plastic debris accumulates. From styrofoam cups to artificial organs, plastics are perhaps the most ubiquitous and versatile material ever invented. No invention in the past 100 years has had more influence and presence than synthetics. But such progress has had a cost. For better and for worse, no ecosystem or segment of human activity has escaped the shrink-wrapped grasp of plastic. Addicted To Plastic is a global journey to investigate what we really know about the material of a thousand uses and why there's so darn much of it. On the way we discover a toxic legacy, and the men and women dedicated to cleaning it up. The film provides a wealth of expert interviews on practical and cutting edge solutions to recycling, toxicity and biodegradability. These solutions - which include plastic made from plants - will provide viewers with a new perspective about our future with plastic.
Avenue Zéro/ Hélène Choquette / CA / 2009 / 52 min / English - French / S.T. French

Between Midnight & The Roosters Crow/ Nadja Drost / CA / 2005 / 66 min / English - Spanish / S.T. English
In the aggressive search for the 'black gold' that drives Western economies, multinational corporations are working to extract billions of dollars of oil reserves from beneath Ecuador's rainforest. BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND THE ROOSTER'S CROW investigates the operations of the EnCana Corporation, a firm that, despite proud public declarations of its social responsibility, is shown to be answerable for widespread environmental contamination and human rights violations. BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND THE ROOSTER'S CROW focuses on EnCana's development of a heavy crude oil pipeline from the Amazon across the earthquake-prone Andes to the Pacific coast for export. Since oil exploitation represents a solution for Ecuador's economic crisis, the government has gone out of its way to facilitate EnCana's plans, disregarding protests about property destruction and contamination. The government has even lauded EnCana for its supposed responsibility (the film's title refers to a government decision to present EnCana with an environmental award). Filmmaker Nadja Drost follows the cross-country route of the pipeline, along the way interviewing farmers, indigenous community representatives, environmental activists and others, who recount forced relocation, imprisonment, and intimidation, including shootings and beatings by the Ecuadorian police and army who protect EnCana's pipeline.Bevel Up:

Sexy Inc./ Sophie Bissonnette / CA / 2007 / 35 min / French - English
Sex sells. The visual media in general are over sexing our youth. The National Fim Board of Canada has an interesting documentary about the exploitation of the youth culture who are exposed daily to sexual images and how it is having a profound influence in their thinking. Kids in their early teens should be thinking about having fun. There are no longer any barriers. Mothers are now dressing like they are still younger than they should be. Their relationships with their kids are friend based at the same level. Constantly bombarded with bawdy images and language each day from early morning till they come home to watch shows that have way too much sexual content.
Toxic Trespass/ Barri Cohen / CA / 2007 / 81 min / English
In Toxic Trespass, intrepid filmmaker Barri Cohen launches an investigation into the effects of the chemical soup around us. She starts with her 10-year-old daughter, whose blood carries carcinogens like benzene and the long-banned DDT. Then, Cohen heads out to Windsor and Sarnia: Canadian toxic hotspots, with startling clusters of deadly diseases. Here, everyone seems to know children who have suffered respiratory illnesses, leukemia, brain tumours and other illnesses. And on the Native reserve of Aamjiwnaang, ringed by Sarnia's "chemical valley," the film reveals a startling birth rate problem that officials just can't ignore. Cohen journeys into toxic nightmares all too common in industrialized countries. She meets passionate activists working for positive change, along with doctors and scientists who see evidence of links between environmental pollution and health problems. And she learns how quickly barriers can go up when anyone tries to even ask questions about the connection betweeen toxins and serious health problems. Perhaps most appalling - and funny, in their own twisted way - are the roadblocks Cohen encounters when she tries to get information from federal officials. One tells her his department is "planning to discuss the plans." This moving documentary is empowering and leavened with wry humour. Carried by Cohen's passion for truth and her disarming openness, it is essential viewing for anyone concerned about the effects of pollutants on our - and our children's - very DNA. Toxic Trespass is accompanied by a comprehensive guidebook for educators, activists and concerned citizens, produced by the Women's Healthy Environment Network.

Hijacked Future/ David Springbett / CA / 2008 / 43 min / English
Eating breakfast toast: a simple ritual to start the day. The bread probably came from a bakery or grocery store, but beyond that who knows where the wheat came from – never mind the seeds that grew the wheat. Do we need to know? A new documentary, “Hijacked Future” says yes, because those seeds that became the toast you ate this morning are being hijacked - right into a looming world food security catastrophe.
BAS! Beyond the Red Light / Wendy Champagne / CA / 2010 / 77 min / Hindi - Nepali - English / S.T. English
In BAS! Beyond the Red Light 13 young girls sold into Mumbai’s infamous network of gated brothels confront the inner and outer perils of life after rescue and reveal the very human story inside the big business of child trafficking.
The film explores this lesser known issue of rehabilitation and reintegration of child victims from these girls point of view. We move between gated brothels and guarded dormitories to a rehearsal studio where the girls practice bhangra dance moves learned from lazy afternoons in front of the communal TV and rehearsed in regular dance therapy classes, to tell their stories to the rest of the world.
