In 2014 Zoltán Horváth (guitar) and Gergely László (vocals) had the idea that they want to start a raw southern rock, grunge stoner band. They needed a rhythm section, so they posted a WANTED announcement on Facebook. A few hours later Attila Balogh (bass) and Dominik Dencs (drums) applied for the positions… and the two knew each other from their previous band.
Dungaree signed up for the Rock and Metal GBOB Banat Semifinal (October 29th, 2015 at Daos Club in Timishoara/Romania), so we decided it was time to get to know the Hungarian band a little better.
RiCo for CZB.ro: What does Dungaree mean to you?
Attila Balogh (bass, Dungaree): We wanted a name that represents our kind of music. A bit southern, a bit bluesy, but still hard. Dungaree is a kind of fabric and also a clothes brand.
You know, what the farmers wear: Redneck style.
CZB: How many gigs have you had; what cities have you played in?
Attila Balogh (Dungaree): We've had 25 gigs so far. We played all around Hungary. Once we also played in Timisoara. That was our best gig in my opinion. There were more than 300 people there.
CZB: Tell me about an interesting situation you had on the road with the band?
Attila Balogh (Dungaree): I can’t really describe exact situations; we love being on the road. We usually sing along to shitty pop songs that we hear on the radio. Once we almost hit a herd of red deer in north Hungary. It was a bit scary.
CZB: How do you write your songs?
Attila Balogh (Dungaree): We bring our ideas to practice or we just jam until someone says „hey that’s cool, keep doing that”. Then we start to work with that riff and build a song.
We don’t really have a message. We just want to have fun - and we also want the audience to have fun. Everybody loves to party, drink a beer, be with a girl [or a girl with a dude ;)] listen to beefy, muddy guitar and bass riffs, put down their daily weights at the entrance and just listen, or headbang, or shout. That’s what it's all about, isn’t it?
We play the kind of music that we would also listen to at home.
CZB: What is the Hungarian music scene like in 2015?
Attila Balogh (Dungaree): It’s pretty versatile; there are a bunch of alternative bands, classic rock bands, metal bands, stoner bands, folk bands, leather pants - long hair rock bands.
Pop bands are just as lame as they were 10 years ago… but nowdays the Folk thing is also popular.
CZB: Is there anything that you think could be done better in Hungary to better promote young bands?
Attila Balogh (Dungaree): Nationwide radio stations are the only possibility. If they play your music, you will get some attention.
Not once or twice though.
They have to play your music daily. That’s how it works here.
CZB: If you could have a superhuman power, what would this be?
Attila Balogh (Dungaree): I would summon medium done steaks whenever I want.
CZB: What is your favorite book and your favorite movie?
Attila Balogh (Dungaree): Well I would probably say Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas from Hunter S. Thompson. I like the book and the movie as well.
But I also like Isaac Asimov’s novels and Stephen King books.
CZB: What is your aim as a band?
Attila Balogh (Dungaree): Mine, and I think I can state this for the whole band …our aim is to spread our music as far and wide as we can …all around Hungary and Europe.
CZB: Why did you sign up for GBOB România 2015?
Attila Balogh (Dungaree): Like I said, we want to spread our music and we want to introduce ourselves to a wider audience. We have already played in Romania; the people are awesome there: we love that audience. I think they would like to listen to us again.
